Cash (Rubles / USD / EUR for exchange) is the safest payment method for tourists. Western credit cards (Visa/Mastercard) do not work. UnionPay is often unreliable.

Language

In tourist centers and upscale hotels, English is spoken. Download an offline translator app and learn some basic Russian phrases – Russians appreciate the effort.

Safety

Russian cities are safe. Follow the usual precautions as in any metropolis. The emergency number is 112.

Climate & Clothing
