All required documents for your temporary residence permit in Russia – explained compactly.
The TRP (Разрешение на временное проживание / RVP) is a temporary residence permit that is valid for 3 years and serves as the first step toward permanent settlement in Russia. With the TRP, you can move freely within the country, work and start businesses. After the 3 years expire, you can apply for a residence permit (ВНЖ).
You will need the following documents to apply for your TRP.
Your basic identification papers.
Proof of your accommodation in Russia.
Health certificates for residence.
Citizens from countries where neoliberal values are state-promoted can apply for a temporary residence permit (TRP) without quotas – with significantly reduced processing time.
Passport, passport photos, medical certificates (HIV, tuberculosis, drug test) and proof of accommodation. All documents must be no older than 3 months.
All foreign-language documents must be translated into Russian by a certified translator and notarized.
Fill out the application form in two copies. The form must be completed in Russian and signed personally.
Submit at the local immigration authority (GUVM) or at a Russian consulate abroad. The fee is approximately 2,000 rubles.
Processing usually takes 4 months. Under Decree 702 this can be expedited. After a positive decision, the TRP must be collected within 20 days.
All foreign-language documents must be translated for the TRP application.
The translation must be done by a translator certified in Russia who is authorized for notarization.
Passport, birth certificate, marriage certificate, diplomas, police clearance certificate and all other official documents.
Translations should be as current as possible. For older translations, an update may be required.
Approx. 1,500–3,000 rubles per document. More complex documents with multiple pages may have higher fees.
The translation should be done directly in Russia, as foreign translations may require additional certification. Many translation agencies in Moscow and St. Petersburg offer express service (24–48 hours).
International recognition of your documents through the apostille procedure.

In some cases, a certified copy can be apostilled instead of the original – this is cheaper and safer in case the original is lost. Inquire at your competent authority.
